Offshore fishing in Islamorada isn't your average day on the pond. We're talking serious techniques for serious fish. We'll likely start by trolling - that's dragging lures or rigged baits behind the boat as we cruise. It's a killer method for covering water and enticing those pelagic predators like Mahi and Tuna. Keep your eyes peeled for floating debris or weedlines - that's where the baitfish hang out, and where there's bait, there's usually something big looking for lunch. If we spot a good sign, we might switch to live baiting or even break out the kites. Yep, you heard that right - kite fishing is a Florida Keys specialty that keeps your bait right on the surface where those big boys can see it. Whatever method we're using, our crew will walk you through it step by step. You'll be working the gear like a pro in no time, and trust me, when that reel starts screaming, you'll be glad you paid attention!
"Absolutely awesome time reef fishing with Doc & Georgie. These guys really know how to catch fish. The whole time we're reeling them in, the boat radio was buzzing with other boats asking each other "where are the fish?" This was the best graduation present for my son that he will never forget. Recommend these guys a million times over. Can't wait to go back!" - Andrew
Mahi Mahi, or as we call 'em down here, Dorado or Dolphin (the fish, not Flipper!), are the crown jewels of offshore fishing in Islamorada. These acrobatic beauties are known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked. They're fast growers and can reach up to 30 pounds in their first year! Mahi are surface feeders, often found near floating debris or weedlines. Their flesh is mild and delicious, making them a favorite for both sport and table. The best time to target Mahi is typically from April through September when the waters warm up and they follow the Gulf Stream currents.
Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna are another prized catch in these waters. These torpedo-shaped speedsters are built for power and endurance. Yellowfin can grow to over 200 pounds, while their smaller cousins, the Blackfin, usually top out around 30 pounds. Both species are known for their hard-fighting nature and delicious meat that's perfect for sashimi. Tuna tend to school up and feed aggressively, so when you find them, it can be non-stop action. We typically see good Tuna fishing year-round, with peaks in the spring and fall.
While Mahi and Tuna are our primary targets, don't be surprised if we tangle with some other offshore monsters. Wahoo, with their blazing speed and razor-sharp teeth, often make surprise appearances. And if we're really lucky, we might even hook into a Blue Marlin - the ultimate prize for any offshore angler. These apex predators can top 1000 pounds and put up a fight that'll leave you sore for days. Just remember, we practice catch and release for billfish to help maintain healthy populations for future generations.

Mahi Mahi are a favorite target here in Islamorada. These colorful fighters average 15-30 pounds but can top 80. Look for them near floating debris and weedlines offshore, especially from spring through fall. They're fast swimmers and hard hitters, giving you an exciting fight on light tackle. Mahi love to chase flying fish, so we'll often troll with skipping baits to mimic their prey. The meat is excellent - firm and mild. Here's a local tip: if you spot frigate birds working an area, there's a good chance Mahi are below. They're usually found in the top 100 feet of water, so we don't need to fish deep. Whether you're after a trophy bull or just want to fill the cooler, Mahi are a blast to catch and make for some great fish stories back at the dock.
