Our captains know these waters like the back of their hand, so you'll be dropping lines right where the action is. We provide all the gear, so all you need to bring is your A-game and maybe a cold drink or two. Over the course of four hours, you'll have plenty of chances to reel in some real beauties – we're talking gag grouper, mutton snapper, and if luck's on our side, maybe even a goliath grouper or shark to really get your heart racing.
Wreck and reef fishing in Islamorada is an art form, and we've got it down to a science. We'll be using a mix of techniques depending on what's biting and where we are. Expect to do some bottom fishing with heavy tackle – that's how you get those big grouper and snapper. We might also do some drift fishing over the reefs, letting our baits naturally float down to where the fish are hiding. The key is reading the water, knowing the spots, and having the right bait. Speaking of bait, we'll have a mix of live and cut bait on board. Pinfish, blue runners, and squid are all on the menu – for the fish, that is. Our gear is top-notch, with sturdy rods and reels that can handle anything from a feisty yellowtail to a bull shark. And don't worry if you're new to this – our crew will show you the ropes, from baiting your hook to setting the hook when a big one hits.

Let's talk about the stars of the show – the fish you're after on this trip. First up, the mutton snapper. These guys are like the prize fighters of the snapper world. They're smart, they're strong, and they put up one heck of a fight. Muttons can grow up to 30 pounds, but even the smaller ones will give you a run for your money. They love hanging around rocky bottoms and reefs, so that's where we'll be dropping our lines. The best part? Muttons are delicious – firm, white meat that's perfect for grilling.
Next, we've got the gag grouper. These bruisers are the reason you bring heavy tackle. Gags can easily top 50 pounds, and they're known for their powerful first run. Once they get hooked, they'll try to dive back into their rocky homes, so you've got to be quick on the reel. They're most active in cooler months, making winter and early spring prime time for gag grouper fishing. When you hook into one of these, you'll know it – it's like trying to reel in a Volkswagen.
But that's not all – the reefs around Islamorada are teeming with all sorts of other species. You might hook into some yellowtail snapper, which are smaller but super fun to catch on light tackle. Or maybe you'll get lucky and find yourself battling a greater amberjack – these guys are pure muscle and will test your stamina. And let's not forget about the possibility of hooking into a goliath grouper. These massive fish can weigh hundreds of pounds and are catch-and-release only, but the thrill of reeling one in is something you'll never forget.
Look, there's a reason why Kekoa Charters is a top pick for fishing in Islamorada. We know these waters, we know the fish, and we know how to show our guests a good time. This 4-hour trip is perfect if you want to get out there and catch some serious fish without spending all day on the water. It's great for families, groups of friends, or even solo anglers looking to join a charter. Plus, with all gear provided and expert guidance from our crew, you don't need to be a pro to have a successful day.

Doc and his mate were the most entertaining crew ever! Their combination of knowledge and experience put us on the meat with a near limit of mangrove and mutton snapper (along with a tuna) between 5 guys! I can't say more about their skill, integrity, and ability to run an effective fishing charter.

Gag grouper are heavyweight champs of the reef, averaging 20-30 inches but sometimes topping 50 pounds. These ambush predators hang around rocky bottoms, ledges, and wrecks in 60-250 feet of water. They're structure-oriented fish, so precise anchoring is key. Gags are most active in cooler months, making winter the prime season. Anglers love targeting them for their hard-hitting strikes and powerful fights – they'll try to muscle you back into their hole every time. Live bait is the ticket here – pinfish, grunts, or blue runners. These grouper have serious teeth, so we use heavy leader. Here's a local trick: when you feel the bite, give the fish a second to swallow before setting the hook. Then, reel like crazy to turn its head away from the structure. Gag grouper make for some fantastic eating too, with firm white fillets that are hard to beat.

Mutton snappers are a prized catch in the Keys, known for their tasty meat and strong fight. These fish typically range from 15-20 inches, though some monsters can hit 30+ pounds. You'll find them around reefs and wrecks, often in 80-300 foot depths. They're suckers for fresh bait, so we'll use live pinfish or chunks of ballyhoo. Muttons are smart – they'll inspect your offering before committing. Spring and early summer are prime time, especially during the full moon when they gather to spawn. These fish put up a great battle, with powerful runs trying to break you off in the structure. My pro tip: when you hook one, reel fast and steady to get it away from the bottom. Once you see that flash of pink, you know you've got a keeper on the line.
